Sports Hall Ostermundigen
The new sports hall in Ostermundigen represents a pragmatic yet sensitive response to the needs of a growing municipality. The project integrates the hall harmoniously into its surroundings while creating a distinctive arrival point towards the town.
A growing population and the resulting need to expand school and sports facilities. How to integrate a new sports hall into an incoherent environment while forming a significant entrance to the town? Another challenge was the use of a timber structure in accordance with the technical requirements.
A pragmatic approach led to rational urban and architectural decisions. The hall adopts the linear structure of the existing site and responds to the required clear height. The volume aligns with the planned extension of the O-Bloc. Its height is derived from the adjacent climbing wall, creating a natural relationship. Car parking is placed in an underground garage, enabling the creation of high-quality public spaces around the building.
A key element is the orientation of the main glazed façade towards the Bantiger peak, creating a “landscape image” inside the hall. The timber structure is exposed and becomes an expressive feature of the building. Emphasis was placed on sustainability, reflected among other things in the minimisation of technical systems, the use of district heating and cooling, and the connection to a photovoltaic plant.
