VRT terminal Hranice, Moravia

The design of the new terminal in Hranice na Moravě for the Railway Administration and the town of Hranice was the result of an architectural competition and is now being developed into further stages of project documentation in coordination with all stakeholders and the main designer of the VRT section, the company Afry.

From Hranice into the world

The newly emerging VRT terminal in Hranice offers activation potential for the predominantly manufacturing and warehousing areas in the vicinity of the terminal and for the city of Hranice itself. Despite its brownfield character, the production of companies, woodworking and construction industries in the wider surroundings, etc. is visible. We see the sense in strengthening Hranice as a city for work, housing, nearby recreation, commerce and industry in the 21st century as defined by the city's program concept. With quicker accessibility, the nearby area will become the centre of Moravia to the world and the positive assets of the place can be positively developed and the potentials of Borders can be further developed.

The design of the platform building, the underpass, the inter-railway apron building with a distinctive transparent lantern, the viaduct, the bus terminal roof and the associated car park buildings is a simple series of separate, related or directly interconnected buildings that can be implemented and operated independently. Each stands on its own, but together they form a whole, or rather a set of buildings, which redefines the currently unsatisfactory surroundings of the station and bus terminal and can be the initiating building for the positive development of the immediate surroundings of the newly emerging high speed rail line.

Idea: "Not just to get around, but to experience space"

The architectural thesis of the proposal is that while the design of a high quality transport object is primarily about utilitarianism, simplicity and functionality of the solution, the added value of the proposed platform, concourse and bus terminal roof aims not only to fulfil its purpose, but to let the visitor and passer-by experience the true essence of architecture. Space.

Coming from the city, one approaches under the open-air roof of the bus station and among its green islands. He enters the viaduct and, guided by the symbol of the dome, or roof, is drawn further into the elevated lobby surrounded by light. The translucent lantern of the roof of the entrance hall changes its atmosphere, its temperature and brightness, according to the time of day and the season. Through a spacious passageway, one continues on to the platform again to the rooftops, where sheltered from the ills of the weather, one waits for the train. He leaves the Borders in this way, but to return and experience this city and with them this spatial series again, in reverse, but always anew.
